Pivot

Pivots are an interaction level applied to a single graphic which may be a Group of other graphics.

The example to the left shows the contents of the Graphic Details Inspector when a Pivot is selected. To view this information use the Graphic Details menu command found on the Tools menu of the Main menu.

Pivots are created with the menu command found on the Interaction submenu of the Format main menu.

To show the information for a Pivot item on a drawing, the Inspector must be open and a Pivot graphic must be selected. The Pivot of interest must be the only item selected.

The coordinates for the center of the Pivot are shown in the numeric text boxes labeled "Across" and "Down". The location of the Pivot may be checked in this manner or the Pivot as a whole may be moved by entering a new value for either coordinate.

The rotation angle of the pivot is listed next. This is the angle of rotation, about the pivot point, applied relative to the positioning of the graphic element contents when the pivot was formed. The values may be in degrees or radians as determined by the Numeric format settings for the drawing.

The position of the pivot point is shown as percentage (or fractions as determined by Numeric format settings) measured on the bounding box of the original graphic element. The Across and Down values are measured on the original - unrotated graphic bounding box. The values 0,0 are defined at the center, with +50 percent across corresponding to the right edge and +50 percent down corresponding to the bottom edge.

The X and Y pivot position values indicate the position of the pivot point on the actual drawing, in the drawing's measuring units according to the drawing's scale. Moving a Pivot as a unit will change these values while the Pivot percentages, just above, would not change with a simple move of the graphic. X and Y are labels indicating Cartesian coordinates, X is the Across value and Y the Down value. Changing these values will move the graphic while maintaining the same position relative to the components of the graphic.

The Nesting checkbox is used to enable the showing and on screen interactive adjustment of nested pivot graphics. When unchecked the pivot graphic will show adjusting handles for only the single pivot graphic. When checked, and when nested pivot graphics are present, pivot adjusting handles are shown for the main pivot graphic and all nested pivot graphics.

Note that checking and unchecking the Nesting checkbox may present no visual difference on the drawing. This will be the case if a Pivot graphic does not contain another pivot graphic. When this is the case the checkbox is disabled.

When Nesting is enabled, nested pivot graphics are shown. Other pivot graphics that are themselves part of a nested pivot graphic may or may not be shown, this determined by the Nesting setting for the nested pivot graphic. Changing the Nesting value of the top level Pivot graphic will not alter the Nesting setting for nested pivots - this must be changed by ungrouping and specifically changing the setting.

Numeric inspection and changes are possible for only the top level Pivot graphic; nested pivot graphics may only be edited interactively on the screen. Numeric editing of nested Pivot graphics requires ungrouping and individual inspection and editing.
