Open, Open Recent

These menu commands are used to open a file that has been saved on your file system (hard drive) or iCloud. You normally will use this command to open EazyDraw files saved in the native .ezdraw file format. But the Open panel is used to create a new EazyDraw document with the contents of files saved in many other graphic formats such as JPG, TIFF, PDF, SVG, and many others.

You may also open an EazyDraw file by double clicking on the file icon on the desk top.

The Open menu command will create a new EazyDraw drawing window with the contents as they were last Saved to a file on the hard drive. This command presents a folder hierarchy navigation menu that is used to choose a file for the target of the action. Only files with the extension ".ezdraw" are enabled for selection in the file navigation panel. The extension may not be visible in the file lists presented. The "EazyDraw File Icon" (shown below) is associated with each file that has been saved in the native EazyDraw file format.

Choose a folder in the From pop-up menu or select a folder in the column view to locate a drawing. You may type in a path or path/filename designator in the text box and navigate to a particular location using Unix file designator conventions (~ for home, slash as separator).

The "Open Recent" menu is provided as a convenience. The most recent saved files are shown on the sub menu. These files may be opened by selecting desired file from the sub menu.

Beginning with Mountain Lion and Sandboxing there is no menu to set a specific file type. All files that EazyDraw can read are enabled for selection.

There may be Sandboxing limitations when opening SVG drawings with the App Store version of EazyDraw. The App Store version of EazyDraw is Sandboxed. This prevents EazyDraw from randomly (from the OS’s point of view) accessing files. The SVG specification provides the possibility of external links for graphic elements of SVG drawings. It is common that components of the SVG drawing are contained in ancillary files (such as independent bitmap images provided as separate files) that reside in the same or a certain folder relative to the drawing. A Sandboxed application is not allowed to read these exo-graphic files. The work around for this is to place the SVG drawing and associated content files in EazyDraw’s Container. See paragraph below for more details.

Add an EazyDraw drawing to an open window by dragging the file icon to the window. The entire contents will be added the drawing, if the incoming file has more than one layer a sheet is presented with options for layer contents placement.

Add the contents of any graphics file to a drawing by dragging the file icon to an open EazyDraw window. In some cases you may insert a file by dragging the File Icon from the title bar of another window in another application to an EazyDraw window, this depends on the support provided by the other application.

Open Recent - caveat: On system preferences, General panel, there is a setting for the desired number of Recent Items. The determines the number of drawings remembered on the Recent Items menu. If this value is set to None (zero), macOS will rebuild EazyDraw’s File menu and remove several important items such as "Save As" and "Duplicate". This setting of None for Recent Items should be avoided.

Sandboxed Container. This only applies to the App Store version of EazyDraw, the Free Market version of EazyDraw does not make use of a Container. The About panel of EazyDraw (accessed from the main EazyDraw menu) shows the location of the Documents folder of the OS assigned Container folder for the Sandboxed EazyDraw App. Look to that panel for the exact location for the Container’s Documents folder. EazyDraw is allowed unfettered access to this folder. Use this folder for any action that is blocked by Sandbox limitations, such as reading a SVG file with external content.

Hidden Library folder. At the time of this writing the sandboxed container is found in the local Library folder. macOS "hides" this folder, it is not shown when viewing the Home folder. Use Cmd-Shift-G to open a text input to accept a text specification of the hidden folder. Use this specifier: "~/Library" . The first character is Tilde, this is the unix / macOS shorthand for the Home folder. This technique provides access to the hidden Library folder. From there navigate in the normal fashion to the Container Documents folder as illuminated on the About EazyDraw panel.
